Zamboanga watershed supply falls, causes problems

Water shortages are affecting city dwellers in Barangay Pasonanca in Zamboanga due to a declining supply at a water treatment plant. The Pasonanca watershed’s water level is below normal, and the ongoing rains aren’t helping it, according to Krissa Dapitan’s “Unang Balita” report from Tuesday. Sixty barangays in the central business district and east coast region receive water from the watershed.

The water level was lower than the area’s typical water level of 74.20 meters as of 6 a.m. on Tuesday, at 74.04 meters. The Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) issued a warning, stating that in the absence of significant rainfall over the next few days, the water supply may continue to decline. In the impacted communities, water rationing has been instituted by the local government.

“Although may increase sa ating production, hindi pa namin puwedeng i-lift ang water rationing schedule dahil pataas-baba ang water level natin. Hindi pa talaga nag-no-normalize,” said ZCWD spokesperson Raul Rivera. (Although there has been an increase in our production, we still cannot lift the water rationing schedule because our water level continues to rise and fall. It hasn’t normalized yet) Residents who are impacted have started to voice their complaints about the lack of water.

“We have a long day ahead of us here. Does it still have a ring, or is it still being mended? stated local Marilou. It is the second day without water for us. When it rains all the time, why is there still no water? PAGASA Zamboanga promised that June would bring constant rains, restocking the area’s water supply.
