US Ambassador to the Philippines Marykay Carlson expressed optimism Thursday that the United States and the Philippines are close to finalizing a new trade agreement. Speaking during the US Embassy’s Fourth of July celebration, Carlson emphasized that both nations are diligently working toward a mutually beneficial deal.

“I am confident that both sides are working very hard to reach an agreement,” Carlson stated, highlighting the importance of ongoing negotiations in strengthening bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, in Washington, the Trump administration’s recent tariff policies continue to impact businesses. A 90-daypause on new, substantial tariffs for multiple countries is set to expire on July 9, with President Donald Trump indicating that no extension will be issued. He assured the public that formal communication regarding tariff updates will be forthcoming.

With trade negotiations as an “evolving issue,” Carlson, who has experience in trade diplomacy, remains hopeful about the future of US-Philippines economic ties. She noted that disputes and negotiations are integral to trade development and underscored the countries’ intent to maintain a strong partnership rooted in friendship, cooperation, and shared prosperity.

Trade discussions are increasingly intertwined with the strategic defense relationship, especially since President Marcos assumed office. An anonymous source from the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry revealed that the Philippines continues to remind the US of the importance of their alliance and is keen on expanding defense cooperation. The Philippines is hopeful that the ongoing trade talks will achieve outcomes similar to Vietnam’s, potentially resulting in the elimination of tariffs and opening new avenues for economic growth.
