Child rape cases up in Zamboanga

by Jake Sanders, Editor

The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) reported that there have been nearly 100 reported rape cases involving minors since January 2024. From January 1 to August 28, 2024, there were 95 such cases, with 33 of them resolved.

According to the police, 85 percent of these incidents are classified as incest, where the offenders are relatives of the victims. ZCPO Director Col. Kimberly Molitas stated, “We have received complaints regarding rape, primarily of an incestuous nature, occurring within households, and we strongly condemn these acts.”

Authorities noted that many suspects were under the influence of illegal drugs. “Our campaign against illegal drugs is closely linked to this issue, as we observe that many assailants are drug users,” Molitas added.

In response, officials are enhancing the enforcement of the Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313) in schools. Students are encouraged to report any incidents of sexual harassment or rape to school authorities.

“Students can talk to their guidance counselors or principals, and police will be part of this team,” Molitas explained.

Parents and guardians are also being urged to monitor their children’s activities closely.
