ZAMBOANGA CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – A police officer targeted for assassination has demonstrated remarkable bravery by successfully neutralizing his attackers and is now being considered for recognition for his heroism.

Police Colonel Kimberly Molitas, the acting city police director, confirmed that efforts are underway to honor Police Senior Master Sergeant Ryan Mariano for his courageous actions. “We are working on it (as we speak),” Molitas stated.

On December 31, Mariano faced a life-threatening situation when he confronted his assailants, Haber Tating and Kashmir Ladjahassan Jallao, who were intent on killing him in Zone 1, Barangay Ayala. According to a police report from Police Senior Master Sergeant Adzhar Lagbas, Mariano, an intelligence operative with the Zamboanga City Police Station 9, sustained injuries during the shootout. The confrontation, which unfolded in the streets and was recorded by CCTV, saw Mariano taking cover behind a vehicle before bravely returning fire and successfully neutralizing both attackers.

Mariano’s actions not only saved his own life but also exemplified the valor that police officers exhibit in the line of duty. His quick thinking and tactical response in a high-pressure situation highlight the commitment of law enforcement to protect the community, even at great personal risk. Such incidents remind us of the dangers faced by police officers and the sacrifices they make daily to ensure public safety. The upcoming recognition for Mariano serves as a testament to the dedication and bravery inherent in the police force, inspiring both his colleagues and the community he serves.
