Climate Change :A growing concern

Sheilla Cajayon Ysug-Lee, R.N.

As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, Zamboanga City, is not immune to its devastating effects. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events are all taking a toll on the city and its inhabitants. It is imperative that we acknowledge the severity of this crisis and take collective action to mitigate its impacts and ensure a sustainable future for Zamboanga City.
One of the most pressing concerns in Zamboanga City is the rising sea level, which poses a significant threat to the city’s coastal communities. The city’s low-lying areas, such as Cawa-Cawa and Baliwasan, are already experiencing frequent flooding, displacing residents and affecting businesses. Moreover, the increasing intensity of typhoons and storms, such as Super Typhoon Odette, which battered the city in 2021, highlights the urgent need for climate-resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness measures.
Climate change is also affecting the city’s agricultural sector, which is a significant contributor to the local economy. Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns are altering the growing conditions for crops, leading to reduced yields and decreased productivity. This, in turn, affects the livelihoods of farmers and their families, who rely heavily on agriculture for their income. Furthermore, the changing climate is also altering the distribution and prevalence of disease-carrying insects, such as mosquitoes and ticks, which poses a significant risk to public health.
Another critical issue is the city’s waste management, which is exacerbating the climate crisis. The lack of adequate solid waste management infrastructure and practices, such as improper disposal of waste and lack of recycling, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and perpetuates a culture of waste and pollution. This not only harms the environment but also poses health risks to residents, particularly those living in informal settlements.
To address these challenges, it is essential that the city government, in collaboration with other stakeholders, develops and implements a comprehensive climate change adaptation and mitigation plan. This plan should prioritize the development of climate-resilient infrastructure, such as sea walls, flood-control systems, and green spaces. Additionally, the city should invest in renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
The city should also launch public awareness campaigns to educate residents about climate change, its impacts, and the simple actions they can take to reduce their carbon footprint. This includes promoting sustainable practices, such as reducing waste, conserving water, and using public transportation. Moreover, the city should support research and development initiatives that focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation, particularly those that involve the participation of local communities and stakeholders.
Climate change is a pressing concern that requires immediate attention and collective action in Zamboanga City. The city’s unique geography and socioeconomic context make it vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, but it also presents opportunities for innovation and collaboration. By working together, we can build a more resilient and sustainable Zamboanga City, where residents can thrive and enjoy a better quality of life, despite the challenges posed by climate change. It is time for us to take action and ensure a brighter future for our city and its inhabitants.
