Zamboanga City marks another milestone last February 26, as it celebrates its 88th anniversary as a Chartered City with variety of activities highlighted by the grand rollout of services caravan and a job fair.
Mayor John Dalipe and other city officials will lead the activities starting off with the “Gran Programa de Justo y Decente Ayuda” at 8am at the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) gym in barangay Baliwasan and the grand Dia de Zamboanga Job Fair with over 12K job opportunities up for grabs at 9am at the KCC Mall in Gov. Camins.
Today is declared a special non-working holiday in Zamboanga City pursuant to Proclamation 784 issued by Malacanang last January 23.
Dubbed as ‘Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga’, the Charter Anniversary celebration kicked off as early as first week of February with a wide array of activities that included sports events; drum and lyre, hip hop and cheerdance competitions; Feria de Productos; Savores Culinary contest and cultural dance competition; CineChavacano film festival; the 2025 Local Achiever Awards; Tourism Souvenir competition; Concurso de Saber and a host of others.
February 26 is a significant milestone in the history of Zamboanga, as it marks the day when Zamboanga gained its autonomy as a distinct and separate local government unit.
The conversion of Zamboanga into a city is based on Commonwealth Act No. 139 otherwise known as the charter of the city of Zamboanga, approved on October 12, 1936 by President Manuel L. Quezon. The city was inaugurated as a charter on February 26, 1937 with the Honorable Nicasio Valderozza as the first appointed mayor and five others as members of the City Council taking their oath of office in front of City Hall.
The celebration of the Dia de Zamboanga every February 26 is provided in Resolution 669, approved on October 15, 1986 and signed by then OIC Mayor, the late Julio Cesar F. Climaco. Under the resolution, the late Climaco declared Feb. 26, 1987 as the 50th anniversary of the formal inauguration of the city of Zamboanga as a Chartered City and proclaimed February 26th of every year as the Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga.
