The General Parent-Teacher Associations (GPTA) of both the Elementary and Secondary Departments of the Integrated Laboratory Schools (ILS), Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), successfully collaborated on their first-ever Bloodletting Activity and Medical Mission held at the ILS Covered Court on Saturday, October 26, 2024.

In partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, Zamboanga City Chapter, the GPTAs organized the bloodletting drive to encourage parents, guardians, relatives, and even students to donate blood, especially those with rare blood types, to aid patients in need.

The Grade 10 and 12 officers of the Senior Red Cross Youth Organization (SRCY) of the WMSU ILS High School actively participated as volunteers, aligning with their Red Cross Month celebration. This event provided an opportunity for them to apply their newly acquired skills from the recent Basic Life Support Training. Under the guidance of their SRCY Moderator, Asst. Prof. Indira P. Concepcion, the SRCY officers assisted Red Cross staff and guided donors through the blood donation process.

A medical mission, conducted by the City Health Office, offered healthcare services to parents and faculty. City Health Officer, Dr. Dulce Amor Dagalea-Miravite, expressed her full support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of the well-being of parents, guardians, and faculty in fulfilling their roles.

The idea for this collaborative effort originated from Dr. Carl Richard C. Dagalea, President of the Elementary GPTA, who recognized the potential of parental and community cooperation to achieve significant goals. He envisioned the GPTAs of both departments working together to serve the school and the wider community.

Dr. Victor A. Liozo Jr., President of the High School GPTA, wholeheartedly supported the initiative, advocating for service to the common good. He believes that such community service can inspire parents to become role models for their children.

The successful implementation of this event was made possible by the unwavering support of the school administration, including Dr. Anna Louisa R. Perez and Dr. Riah R. Barcelona, Principals of the ILS Elementary and Secondary Departments, respectively; Dr. Iya Elago, University Physician; Dr. Nursia M. Barjose, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Joselito Madronal, Vice President for Administration and Finance (as Officers-in-charge of the Office of the President); and Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, WMSU President.

The GPTA officers and faculty of both departments played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth execution of the event, making it a resounding success. This collaborative effort demonstrates the power of unity and the positive impact that community engagement can have on society.

Accidents can strike at any moment, without warning, leaving a trail of devastation and heartbreak in their wake. They can occur in an instant, on any given day, at any hour, and to anyone. It is a harsh but unfortunate reality that we must all face. Despite our best efforts to anticipate and prepare for the unexpected, accidents can still happen unannounced, catching us off guard and leaving us reeling.

From sudden medical emergencies to freak car accidents, from fires to natural disasters, the possibilities are endless and often unpredictable. The reasons for accidents are just as varied, from human error to sheer bad luck. Whatever the cause, the consequences are often severe, resulting in injury, loss of life, and long-lasting trauma for those affected.

In the face of accidents, it is essential that we take a proactive approach to preparation and response. This means being aware of potential hazards, knowing what to do in the event of an emergency, and having a plan in place for unexpected events. It also involves being prepared to adapt to changing circumstances and responding quickly and effectively when disaster strikes.

One of the most critical steps in mitigating the impact of accidents is through education and awareness. Parents, teachers, and community leaders must work together to teach children and adults alike about the importance of safety and preparedness. This includes educating people about how to prevent accidents, such as wearing seatbelts, using fire precautions, and being mindful of potential hazards in the home and on the job.

Additionally, governments and emergency responders must also play a crucial role in preparing for and responding to accidents. This includes investing in emergency services, infrastructure, and training for first responders. It also involves engaging in emergency preparedness exercises and drills to ensure that everyone is equipped to respond effectively in the event of an emergency.

Moreover, advances in technology have made it possible to mitigate the impact of accidents through innovative solutions such as smart homes, autonomous vehicles, and wearable devices. These technologies have the potential to reduce the risk of accidents occurring in the first place, and to provide critical support and assistance in the event of an emergency.

Finally, accidents also serve as a stark reminder of the importance of empathy and compassion in the face of tragedy. As a society, we must come together to support those affected by accidents, providing comfort, care, and resources to help them rebuild and recover.

In conclusion, accidents happen unannounced, and we must be prepared to respond. By prioritizing education, awareness, and preparedness, as well as embracing innovative technologies and providing support and resources to those affected, we can mitigate the impact of accidents and create a safer, more resilient community for all.

In a significant development, authorities in the Philippines have raised the alarm over a new type of drug infiltrating the cities of Pasay and Parañaque. This emerging substance, identified as methylamphetamine, presents a novel challenge for law enforcement and public health officials.

Eleazar Matta, head of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Drug Control Group, announced that this newly discovered drug is typically found in liquid form but can crystallize. Its versatility adds a layer of complexity to its detection and control, necessitating heightened vigilance from both authorities and communities.

Methylamphetamine is cheaper and reportedly less toxic than other substances currently circulating in the illicit market. This affordability and perceived reduction in harm could potentially lead to a surge in demand, making it a growing concern for anti-drug operations.

The discovery in Pasay and Parañaque suggests a strategic move by drug traffickers to target urban areas with high population densities, where the potential for distribution and consumption is vast. This alarming trend underscores the need for intensified efforts to combat the spread of this substance before it gains a foothold.

Authorities are urging the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities that may be linked to drug trafficking. Community awareness is emphasized as a crucial element in the fight against this new threat. The PNP Drug Control Group collaborates with local government units and international agencies to effectively monitor and address the situation.

“This is an urgent call to action,” Matta stated emphatically. “We must act swiftly and decisively to prevent this drug from wreaking havoc on our communities. Our commitment to safeguarding the well-being of our citizens remains unwavering.”

Efforts are underway to educate the public about the dangers posed by methylamphetamine. Awareness campaigns are being launched to inform citizens of the potential risks and to discourage experimentation and use. The focus is on empowering individuals with knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions and resist the lure of illicit substances.

The Philippine government is also exploring partnerships with international organizations to enhance its capabilities in tackling this emerging threat. Cooperation and intelligence sharing are seen as vital components in dismantling the networks responsible for trafficking methylamphetamine.

The emotional impact of drug addiction on families and communities cannot be overstated. The destructive power of substance abuse not only affects individuals but also tears at the fabric of society, leaving lasting scars. All stakeholders must unite with determination and resolve to combat this menace and protect future generations.

As the situation unfolds, the resilience and unity of the Filipino people will be crucial in overcoming this challenge. By remaining vigilant and proactive, there is hope that this new drug can be contained and eradicated, preserving the health and safety of communities nationwide.

In the face of this daunting challenge, the message is clear: the fight against drug trafficking is far from over, and the commitment to a safer, drug-free Philippines remains steadfast.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the mpox outbreak a global health emergency following a significant surge in cases across multiple African countries. This decision comes as WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus accepted the advice of the emergency committee, emphasizing the critical need for international attention and resources to combat the escalating crisis.

The outbreak has ravaged communities, resulting in over 17,000 confirmed cases and tragically claiming the lives of more than 500 individuals in 13 African countries this year alone. The severity of the situation has prompted the WHO to categorize the outbreak as a “very high risk event,” underscoring the urgent need for a coordinated global response to contain the spread of the virus.

Among the hardest-hit regions is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where health systems are strained to their limits as they grapple with the increasing caseload and limited resources. The current strain of the virus has demonstrated a concerning ability to spread rapidly, raising fears that up to 10% of those infected could face fatal outcomes.

One of the hallmark symptoms of mpox is the development of lesions on the genitals, a distressing manifestation that necessitates prompt medical attention. Children are particularly vulnerable to severe complications from the disease, making them a priority in response efforts aimed at mitigating its impact on the most susceptible populations.

While a vaccine exists to combat mpox, its availability remains limited, presenting a significant challenge to containment efforts in the affected regions. The WHO is advocating for increased production and equitable distribution of the vaccine to ensure that those at risk have access to potentially life-saving preventive measures.

Dr. Tedros stressed the necessity of a unified global response to address the rapid spread of mpox in Africa, stating, “The situation demands urgent international collaboration. We must ensure that essential resources, including vaccines and medical supplies, are distributed swiftly and equitably to those in need.”

Public health campaigns are being intensified to combat the outbreak effectively and raise awareness about the disease, its symptoms, and crucial preventive measures. Health experts emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment to reduce transmission rates and prevent further loss of life.

The WHO’s declaration of a global health emergency seeks to mobilize international support and funding to confront the outbreak head-on. As the situation continues to evolve, the organization is committed to providing ongoing updates and guidance to assist in managing and mitigating the virus’s impact on affected communities.

By responding to this crisis with urgency, solidarity, and cooperation, the international community aims to protect vulnerable populations, prevent further escalation of the outbreak, and ultimately end the devastating toll of mpox on individuals and communities across Africa.

In recent years, the quest for healthier eating has led to the popularity of zero-calorie sweeteners, such as erythritol, especially among those adhering to low-carb and keto diets. However, emerging research has raised significant concerns about the safety of erythritol, specifically its potential to double the risk of blood clot formation. This article delves into the findings of this research, the implications for consumers, and the broader context of cardiovascular health.

Understanding Erythritol

Erythritol is a sugar alcohol commonly used as a low-calorie sweetener. It boasts about 70% of the sweetness of sugar but contains virtually no calories, making it an attractive alternative for those looking to reduce their sugar intake. Erythritol is often added to stevia and monk fruit products to provide bulk and improve texture, enhancing these sugar substitutes’ overall taste and mouthfeel. It’s widely used in low-carb and keto-friendly foods and various sugar-free products.

The Blood Clot Risk: Insights from Recent Research

Recent research led by Dr. Stanley Hazen, the Center for Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Prevention Director at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, has brought alarming findings regarding erythritol. According to the study, consuming erythritol can significantly increase the risk of blood clot formation. This research involved a sample size of 100 healthy individuals without chronic diseases and revealed that erythritol doubled the risk of blood clots compared to glucose, which does not impact clotting.

The formation of blood clots is a serious health concern. Clots can break off and travel through the bloodstream to vital organs. If a clot reaches the heart, it can trigger a heart attack. If it travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke. These events are life-threatening and highlight the importance of understanding the potential risks associated with erythritol consumption.

Dr. Hazen’s Perspective

“This is the first head-to-head comparison of the effects of ingesting glucose versus erythritol. Glucose doesn’t impact clotting, but erythritol does,” said Dr. Hazen. The study’s findings are particularly concerning, given the widespread use of erythritol in various food products. While glucose remains neutral in terms of clot risk, erythritol appears to pose significant dangers, especially for individuals prone to cardiovascular issues.

FDA’s Position and Safety Concerns

Despite these troubling findings, erythritol is currently considered “generally safe” by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the study indicates that the elevated risk of clotting persists for two to three days after ingestion, prompting questions about the long-term safety of this sweetener. The FDA’s classification of erythritol as generally safe was based on earlier studies that did not explore its impact on blood clot formation in depth.

Cardiovascular Disease: A Growing Concern

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally, responsible for millions of deaths each year. It encompasses a range of conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes. These conditions develop silently over time, with various factors contributing to their progression. Diet plays a crucial role in developing and managing cardiovascular disease, making it essential to scrutinize the foods and ingredients we consume.

Implications for Consumers

Given the potential risks associated with erythritol, consumers must be vigilant about the sweeteners they include in their diet. Here are some steps to consider:

Read Labels Carefully

Always check the ingredient list on food packaging, especially for products labeled as “sugar-free” or “low-carb.” Erythritol is often included in these products, sometimes in significant amounts.

Consult Healthcare Providers

If you have concerns about erythritol or other sweeteners, discuss them with your healthcare provider. This is particularly important if you have a history of cardiovascular issues or are at risk for blood clotting disorders.

Stay Informed

Follow the latest research and updates on sweeteners and their health impacts. As more studies emerge, recommendations may change, and staying informed will help you make better dietary choices.

Consider Alternatives

Explore other sweetening options with fewer associated risks. Natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, and fruit concentrates can be used in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

Ultimately, making informed dietary choices requires a balance between enjoying the benefits of low-calorie sweeteners and understanding their potential risks. By staying informed and consulting healthcare professionals, we can better navigate the complexities of modern nutrition and prioritize our long-term health.

Data reported by the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) indicated that there were 218 cases of chikungunya documented between January and July 2024. In contrast, only 28 cases were reported in the province in 2023.

Of the affected areas, Tabina had the highest number of cases at 47, followed by Lapuyan and Dinas, each with over 30 cases.

Chikungunya, as described by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes that leads to fever and intense joint pain.

While dengue poses a greater threat than chikungunya, authorities have emphasized the importance of not becoming complacent.

In comparison to dengue, which presents with a consistent high-grade fever for 2-3 days followed by abdominal pain, chikungunya typically involves 1-2 days of fever before the onset of a notably larger rash that is erythematous. Chikungunya is also characterized by joint pain, as stated by Dahlia Aseniero, the Health Education and Promotion Officer of IPHO Zamboanga del Sur.

Authorities have advised that both children and adults are susceptible to chikungunya.

IPHO has recommended applying the same 5S approach used to combat dengue to address chikungunya. This strategy includes search and destroy, self-protection, seeking early consultation, supporting fogging, and maintaining hydration. Additionally, each barangay has been instructed to conduct daily cleanup drives.

Aseniero further emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention at the nearest health center if a family member experiences symptoms such as fever and joint pains.

In a world where heart disease remains a leading cause of death, understanding the symptoms of a heart attack and knowing how to respond promptly can mean the difference between life and death. A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked for a prolonged period, leading to damage or death of the heart muscle. Recognizing the signs early and seeking immediate medical attention is crucial for increasing the chances of survival and minimizing long-term damage.

**Symptoms of a Heart Attack:**

The symptoms of a heart attack can vary from person to person, and they may not always be sudden or intense. Common signs of a heart attack include:

1. **Chest Pain or Discomfort:** One of the most common heart attack symptoms is chest pain or discomfort. It may feel like pressure, tightness, squeezing, or aching in the chest that may come and go.

2. **Upper Body Discomfort:** Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach can also indicate a heart attack.

3. **Shortness of Breath:** Feeling short of breath, especially with or without chest discomfort, is another warning sign of a heart attack.

4. **Cold Sweat, Nausea, or Lightheadedness:** Some people may experience cold sweats, nausea, lightheadedness, and other heart attack symptoms.

5. **Other Signs:** Other possible symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, or a feeling of impending doom.

It is important to note that women may experience different or atypical symptoms compared to men, such as nausea, vomiting, or back or jaw pain. Ignoring these symptoms or dismissing them as indigestion or anxiety can be life-threatening.

**Actions to Take if Someone is Having a Heart Attack:**

If you suspect that someone is having a heart attack, it is crucial to act quickly and decisively. Here are the steps you should take:

1. **Call Emergency Services:** The first and most crucial step is to call emergency services or the local emergency number, such as 911. Time is of the essence during a heart attack, and early intervention can save lives.

2. **Stay Calm and Reassure the Person:** While waiting for emergency medical services to arrive, stay calm and reassure the person experiencing the heart attack. Please encourage them to rest in a comfortable position and avoid any strenuous activity.

3. **Help Them Take Medications:** If a healthcare provider has prescribed nitroglycerin, help the person take it as instructed.

4. **Perform CPR if Necessary:** If the person becomes unresponsive and stops breathing, if you are trained, be prepared to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR can help maintain blood flow to vital organs until medical help arrives.

5. **Do Not Delay Seeking Help:** Avoid delaying seeking medical assistance. Even if you are unsure whether the person is having a heart attack, it is better to err on the side of caution and seek immediate medical attention.

Recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack and taking swift action can significantly improve the outcome of someone experiencing this life-threatening event. Knowing the signs and how to respond effectively can help save lives. Learn CPR because you never know when a friend or loved one may need your help.
