“Buenas and welcome to Pietro’s” is the warm greeting you receive from Robert and co-owners Roland and Peter, as you approach this easy going restaurant, situated in Phase 2 of the Yubenco complex in Tetuan.  The relaxed atmosphere is helped by a soothing playlist, gently playing in the background, to enable easy conversation.  Being an outdoor establishment, with canvas gazebo’s offering ample protection should it rain, there are also moveable fans aplenty to help keep you cool.  Pietro’s offers a mix of traditional Filipino dishes such as sisig, crispy pata, beef bulalo and pancit, alongside spaghetti and meatballs, sloppy Joe burgers and my favourite, Hungarian sausage with rice (of course) and vegetables.  You can wash these down with a selection of sodas, beers (single or a bucket of 6) or maybe a milkshake, the avacado one is delicious.  Pietro’s enjoys the patronage of many regulars (myself included) and is open all afternoon and evening, six days a week, only closing on Mondays.  Why not give Pietro’s a try, with modest prices, you won’t have to break the bank.
See you there maybe!

Zamboanga, a city in the Philippines known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse culinary scene, has become a melting pot of flavors and influences from around the world. One of the most prominent cuisines making its mark in Zamboanga is Malaysian food, which has captured the taste buds of locals and tourists alike with its bold and vibrant flavors.

Malaysian cuisine is a delightful fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Javanese, and Sumatran influences, resulting in a diverse range of dishes that are both flavorful and aromatic. In Zamboanga, Malaysian restaurants and food stalls offer a wide variety of dishes that showcase the unique flavors and cooking techniques of Malaysia.

One of the most popular Malaysian dishes in Zamboanga is Nasi Lemak, a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, served with anchovies, peanuts, boiled eggs, and sambal (spicy chili paste). Another favorite is Satay, skewered and grilled meat (often chicken or beef) served with a rich and flavorful peanut sauce.

For those with a sweet tooth, Malaysian desserts like Cendol (a sweet and refreshing dessert made with coconut milk, green rice-flour jelly, and palm sugar) and Kuih (various traditional Malaysian cakes and pastries) are also widely available in Zamboanga.

Overall, Malaysian food has found a welcoming home in Zamboanga, adding to the city’s culinary diversity and offering residents and visitors a taste of the vibrant and flavorful cuisine of Malaysia.

Restaurant review by Jake Sanders

This is one of the best restaurants in Zamboanga. All the seafood dishes are excellent from clams, fish, shrimps, crabs, curacha etc. They are all very fresh. Never fishy taste. The sauce is heavenly. Pork, beef, soup & other dishes are tastefully & deliciously prepared. The food presentation is outstanding. The restaurant has a comfortable and classy ambiance, immaculately clean & sanitized. No fear of food or germ contamination.

The cutlery is spotlessly clean. You can even see your reflection. The staff are friendly, polite & courteous. The owners are super gracious and ensure you enjoy your meals. Whenever I go to Mindanao, I make a special trip to Zamboanga just to dine at Alavar’s. Before leaving I make sure I bring home pasalubong items – bagon gata, Alavar sauce, coconut jam, lokot lokot etc. When in Zamboanga, stopping at Alavars restaurant is a MUST. If yo are with friends, try one of the choice of dinner platters on the menu.

I highly recommend Alavar Seafood Restaurant.. it’s a dining experience you won’t regret.
